Birthright
Viktor and Danny looked like regular twenty-somethings. Viktor, from Indianapolis, is 26. He came to the U.S. from the Ukraine when he was 19. His terrific English is only slightly marked by his Russian accent. Danny, 20 is from Staten Island. His father is Israeli. He goes to a community college.
As I grabbed the aisle seat in our three-across row, my only hope from Viktor and Danny was that they would be silent (and still) partners in my bid for a sleepful flight from Israel to New York.
Even before we pulled away from the gate, Viktor and Danny began to talk energetically. Not a good sign, I thought to myself.
"You do Taglit?" Viktor asked. Yeah. You?" Danny replied to Viktor's nod.
